Around the world, Hindus commemorate Mauni Amavasya. Many pilgrims stay near the bank of the Triveni Sangam, popularly known as the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, at Prayagraj on the day of Mauni Amavasya.
The significance of Mauni Amavasya is rooted in the belief that a long, happy, and healthy life can be attained by bathing in the Triveni Sangam and expressing genuine, passionate devotion to Lord Vishnu. On the Maghi Amavasya, thousands upon thousands of pilgrims come to the Maha Kumbh Mela.
The origins of Maghi Amavasya
In Kanchipuri, there lived a Brahmin called Devaswami along with his wife Dhanvati, sons, and a daughter who was morally and honestly upright. The narrative centers on the period when his sons all marry off and his daughter stays single. His hunt for a suitable groom for his daughter intensified, so he gave his oldest son the Kundali of his daughter and instructed him to travel to the city in search of a suitable match.
Upon presenting his sister’s Kundali to a skilled astrologer, Devaswami’s eldest son revealed that his sister’s horoscope indicated she would become a widow following marriage. The firstborn son informed his father of the horoscope forecast. Concerned, Devaswami asked the astrologer what the treatment was after hearing this.
The astrologer proposed that if a washerwoman named Soma in Sinhaladweep does a unique puja at their home, the dosha associated with his daughter’s horoscope can be eliminated. However, he will have to go see her and ask for it. Devswami was thirsty, exhausted, and hungry because he had to cross the ocean to get to Soma’s residence. So he decided to go under a banyan tree and rest.
2024’s Magha Amavasya
On that tree dwelt the family of a vulture. The vulture noticed Devaswami was agitated and inquired as to the cause of his concern. When Devswami told the vulture’s family the whole tale, they promised to help him on his way to Soma’s house.
After agreeing, Soma went to Devaswami’s residence with him. Following the customs, she carried out the puja. Later, Gunvati, his daughter, wed. But his husband passed away even after the pooja was completed.
As soon as Soma realized how compassionate she was, she gave Gunvati the benefit of all her good actions. After Gunvati’s husband recovered, Soma went back to Sinhaladweep. Upon arriving home, she saw that her son, son-in-law, and husband had all passed away since she had bestowed all of her virtues upon Gunvati. She began worshiping Lord Vishnu, sitting beneath a peepal tree by the riverbank, deeply sorrowful. She also made 108 laps around the peepal tree.
Her husband, her son, and her son-in-law were returned to life by Lord Vishnu, who was pleased with her devoted devotion. On Mauni Amavasya, devotees have fasted ever since.
